The Green Mobility Zone at WETEX showcases the latest solutions to enhance green transportation efficiency

The Green Mobility Zone at the Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) 2024 will host a group of local and international companies specializing in green transportation, mobility, and logistics.

The zone will highlight the most prominent innovative solutions and practices based on the latest technologies in the sustainable individual and collective transportation sector. These solutions aim to reduce the cost of operations and infrastructure for electric vehicles, improve energy and resource efficiency in the transportation sector, and rely on hydrogen and low-emission or carbon-free fuels.

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is organizing the 26th WETEX under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, from 1 to 3 October 2024 at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Founder and Chairman of WETEX, said that WETEX supports the National Policy for Electric Vehicles, the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030, and the UAE Climate Neutrality Strategy 2050. The exhibition reinforces the UAE’s regional leadership in adopting electric vehicles, as the ratio of charging stations to cars in the country is among the highest in the world. The exhibition is a global platform to showcase future technologies in energy, water, environment, and all vital sectors that contribute to achieving carbon neutrality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

He added that the transportation sector produces 8.7 gigatonnes of emissions annually, representing about 23% of global emissions, according to the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Therefore, the exhibition contributes to achieving national and global climate ambitions to reduce the carbon footprint in the transport sector and drive climate action.

His Excellency affirmed that in 2014, through its “Green Charger” initiative for electric vehicles, DEWA provided the region’s first infrastructure for electric vehicles. The advanced infrastructure for electric charging stations in Dubai includes more than 700 charging stations, with the participation of stakeholders, including nearly 400 “Green Charger” stations owned by DEWA.

His Excellency Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, said: “We are committed to adopting the latest sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies as part of our sustainability strategy. This supports the UAE’s vision to transition to a green economy and supports the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033. WETEX is an opportunity to exchange expertise and best practices that support our vision and strategy for a more sustainable future.”

He added: “The addition of electric vehicles to the Dubai Police fleet enhances our efforts to reduce carbon emissions and rely on clean energy in our daily operations, which contributes to promoting environmental sustainability and preserving resources for future generations. Through these initiatives, we aim to be a role model in adopting sustainable environmental practices across the government sector, while also striving to promote innovation in all areas of our work to ensure the security and safety of society while protecting the environment.”

The UAE ranked first in the Arab world and the region, and among the top ten globally in the Electric Mobility Readiness Index, outperforming major Western markets such as Japan and Australia, and the strongest emerging markets such as India and Brazil. The Global Electric Mobility Readiness Index, prepared by Arthur D. Little, ranks countries based on the readiness of their electric vehicles.

A comprehensive survey conducted by the global Toluna Group revealed that 73% of UAE residents prefer to purchase electric cars, while 61% confirmed their intention to purchase hybrid vehicles in their future purchases.

Mona Al Usaimi, CEO of Strategy and Corporate Governance at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said that the ongoing cooperation and strategic partnership with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) aims to highlight the emirate’s efforts in sustainability, green mobility, and renewable and clean energy, and to enhance Dubai’s position as the best city in the world for living and working.

She explained that the Authority’s participation in WETEX underscores its commitment to keeping abreast of and benefiting from the latest trends and ideas in sustainability and renewable energy, in addition to learning about the latest smart technologies and innovative solutions in the fields of roads, transportation, and mobility. These solutions enhance the implementation of the RTA’s Strategic Plan 2030, which are in line with the emirate’s relevant plans, and contribute to transferring “Dubai’s experience” in flexibility and innovation as a global model.
